Begin with where you are

Where will you be during the visit?

Before arranging an online visit, name the state where you will be. Then ask how the clinician is permitted to care for someone there.

Look closer · a learning step

Check permission for care where you are

A clinician must have permission to practise in the patient’s location, through that state’s licence or another legal route, as of September 2026.

Note A

The September 2026 records show that some states accept telehealth registration from professionals outside the state in place of full licensure there.

Note B

Ask which route applies and which state board can confirm it. A registration is a state-permitted route with its own conditions.

The visit rules also vary

As of September 2026, state rules differed on using forms and phone calls for online prescriptions.

Note C

Ask what kind of visit is proposed and why it meets the rules where you are. Get that answer before assuming the service can see you in that state.

If you will be travelling, name the state where you expect to sit for the visit. Do not leave the service guessing.

Check the right person in the right place

State medical boards hold doctors’ public licence records and disciplinary history.

Note D

Some states run more than one board for doctors, so ask which board holds the record.

For a different clinician role, ask which board holds the licence, then check that board. Use the full name and stated role.

A clean board record shows no public action; it is not a rating of the person’s care.

  1. Federal health guidance on licensure

The guidance leaves room for state-authorised routes and narrow exceptions.

  2. Federal health guidance on cross-state registration

Registration terms vary by state. Ask the relevant board to confirm the route.

  3. Medical-board recommendations for online care

These recommendations do not replace state rules. Ask the board in your state which rules apply.

  4. Medical-board information for consumers

What a board publishes varies. Check both the record and the profession named.
